Mismanagement & misconceptions

Visitors are misled to believe that Laniakea is an official turtle viewing spot when in reality it is a small beach with no management, no parking, and no bathrooms.

  • Laniakea beach is not managed by anyone as a tourist attraction.

  • The beach is too small to accommodate both tourists and turtles with enough space for the turtles to rest.

  • The beach suffers both seasonal and progressive severe erosion. The amount of dry sand for turtles to rest on is less than it used to be.

  • There are no official entry points to the beach. Tour busses drop people off on the side of the road to climb down rocks.

  • Large rocks are falling on to the beach.

  • Turtle Bay, a well-managed resort, and “Turtle Beach” are not the same.

  • Turtles used to rest on this once quiet beach without being surrounded by people.

Laniakea is not a beach park.

  • There are no bathrooms or showers.

  • The city does not pick up trash left by visitors.

  • Strong currents are dangerous along with large surf in the winter.

  • Exposed rocks and reef are extremely slippery.

  • “Parking” at Laniakea is a small unpaved area alongside a busy highway.

  • Many visitors, including tour vans, end up parking in the No Parking zones.

  • It is dangerous for cars to back up onto the highway to leave.

  • Numerous parked cars have been broken into.
